Learning Goal: I’m working on a management discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.Question 1There is an old saying that goes, “The only sure things in life are death and taxes.” In today’s world, however, it seems that a third inevitability can be added: namely, stress. Most of us experience time pressures, worries about the future, difficulties with other people, and many other sources of stress and frustration. Finding ways to deal with the challenges of stress is one of the most important self-regulatory skills that a person can develop. Therefore, all people need to possess a set of stress management skills that they know work well for them and fit their lifestyle. This activity is designed to help you find some ways of coping that work for you. To begin, it helps to understand the major factors that contribute to stress. First, if our physical well-being is depleted it can make stressors more difficult to handle. If you eat unhealthy food, sleep poorly, don’t exercise, smoke, or consume too much alcohol, then you put yourself at risk for greater stress. Second, how we think about events and interpret the meaning of those events is a major factor in how much stress we experience. If we tend to fear the worst, interpret life events in negative ways, and devalue our own abilities to be resilient then we put ourselves at risk for chronic stress. Suggested interventions follow directly from the assumed causes: Change your unnecessarily negative thoughts to more positive, or at least more realistic, thinking. For this activity, we would like you to increase your use of positive coping techniques. To begin, identify at least one event that is currently stressful for you.List at least three ways you could change how you cope with this stressor right now. Be as specific as possible! That is, don’t just say, “I’ll change my thinking,” write how you will change your thinking (for example, from thinking “_______” to thinking “_______”). As you decide on a positive coping technique you can choose one with which you are already familiar, choose one you know about but have not tried, or look at the 101 options listed on the following website: www.ditchthelabel.org/101-ultimate-ways-chill-reduce-stress.
List one difficulty you may have implementing the new coping styles or strategies. That is, describe how you may find it difficult to implement the changes or how you may “self-sabotage” your efforts.
Write down at least one way to cope with the self-sabotage you listed in item 2.
Try out your new strategies for a week and write about what happened. In your journal, include how well the coping worked, what you can do differently to make it more effective, and how you will motivate and remind yourself to use positive coping more in the future.
Question 2Everyone will encounter difficult events in life. At times we all need to adapt and adjust to events that are unexpected or unwanted or pose a serious threat to our current and future well-being. Resilience is the ability to recover successfully from these unwanted events and to regain a sense of security, happiness, and hope for the future. Resilience means “bouncing back” from difficult situations. It is important to know that resilience is a term usually applied to very difficult situations rather than to daily hassles. That is, bouncing back from an unexpected and painful divorce involves resilience, whereas bouncing back from an unexpected flat tire on the way to work is coping with a daily hassle. Although the unexpected and unwished for events of life are stressful, some developmental psychologists believe that we need to adapt to difficulties in order to develop into more mature and resilient people. In other words, a life without challenges can result in shallowness and missed opportunities for personal growth. There is evidence that resilience is related to how people construct the “stories” of their lives. That is, resilience is related to how we create our own internal narratives about who we are, what we have dealt with, what we learned, and where we go next in life (McLean, Pasupathi,
