In today’s culture, every one of us has a distinct identity that colors the way we see the world and its people. In addition to influencing our experiences, our social norms and cultural foundations also set the path for how we see the world. Our history and social and political culture are woven together by conflicts over identity, location, and power. It has been difficult for practically every religious, racial, or ethnic group that formed a part of the American fabric to find common ground, mutual respect, and equality, despite our nation’s diversity. Gender, sexual orientation, and disability are examples of groups with unique experiences and features. White Americans and people from non-majority origins are inextricably connected with our most challenging concerns, including poverty, disenfranchisement, isolation, and inequality. It isn’t entirely viable to solve these issues without addressing this fact (Welton et al. 551). Being made aware of one’s categorization as tied to privilege is probably not a frequent or pleasant experience for many members of the dominant culture (i.e., those who identify as White) in the United States. For many individuals, acknowledging their privileged position may seem uncomfortable or even dissonant with the mainstream narrative of social and political developments through the years. This is especially true when it comes to racial identification. The notion of progress toward equality or being “color-blind” may be used as a mitigating privilege by White Americans. This means that many White people in the United States may be unaware of or choose to ignore that their race alone imparts certain advantages and disadvantages to them. The benefit of being part of the dominant racial group is genuine, even though it is sometimes concealed that many Americans do not see themselves as privileged because of their economic or social standing.For example, if you can afford it, you can shop without the worry of being followed or rent a house in an area where you can afford it without regard to your race. The racial/cultural gap in the United States may be exacerbated because of a lack of knowledge of how privilege contributes to the reality of racism in the United States. Welton et al. (551) noted, “I understood that I had been taught about racism as something that puts others at disadvantage, but also had been taught not to notice one of its corollary characteristics, White privilege, which puts me at an advantage.” The privilege extends much beyond the realm of money and economic standing. It is possible to provide special treatment to select groups within a larger group, such as members of sports teams, people who are thought to be handsome, or members of certain religious organizations. The privilege may be described as having the following characteristics. Intangible benefits are highly prized yet can only be obtained by many people. People born into or identify with a certain group have benefits that they did not earn. In other words, being born into an affluent family gives you access to educational opportunities and mental health and medical care that others don’t have.Similarly, White Americans are more likely than other ethnic groups to enter a shopping mall unafraid of being suspected of shoplifting. The fact that some people have advantages they didn’t earn is just as essential as the fact that others suffer from disadvantages they didn’t cause. The dominant culture’s ideals, which affect political and social choices, frequently limit the benefits that particular groups should be able to claim as unearned rights. This is shown in the following example.
