RESEARCH ON MALARIA 2 Abstract Malaria is an infectious disease that is caused by the Plasmodium bacterium that invades the red blood cells. The disease is thought to have originated from somewhere in Africa alongside with humankind. Besides, the fossils vectors of the disease show that it was in the existence even before the earliest history, about 30millions years ago. A Greece first described the manifestation of malaria was called Hippocrates where he related the disease to the place of residence of the patients and the time of the year. People had previously blamed supernatural powers as the cause of Malaria. However, the disease was later associated with stagnating water and the Romans began to drain the stagnating water. This marked the first intervention against Malaria. This paper studies the history of malaria in the US, symptoms of the disease and the disease causes. Besides, statistics of the disease, prevention and treatment measures have been presented. The paper has also acknowledged the role of the public health professionals in the prevention of the disease spread both at the present and in the future. In addition, the paper provides detailed facts and theories about the disease over the times in its existence. However, a lot of attention has been given to the disease in the US. History of Malaria Malaria has a long history in the United States since 15th Century when the disease was first diagnosed. The first case of the disease in America is associated with the explorer, Christopher Columbus, and his voyage. However, the disease did not last because the vector died of the cold climate in North America (Butler, 2010).
