The importance of reading/learning British Literature for college studentBritish literature is not just any other kind of literature; it is powerful literature that allows learners to develop a thorough knowledge of literary history, criticism and theories and boosts comprehension of various cultures and intellectual traditions. It is not a straightforward form of literature but rather detailed and complex literature that requires learners to think deeply and critically. $$$$$ book is not direct or straightforward because to understand what is being said; one needs to understand the meaning behind every voyage and what the author%%% is trying to convey.Gullivers travel is a story of adventure, including several voyages of Lemuel Gulliver. He was a ships surgeon because of his numerous mishap in various ports. He ended up on unknown islands and lived with people and animals of abnormal sizes, philosophies and behaviour. After every adventure, he was somehow in a position to get back home to England, where he recovered from the unique experiences and later left for a new voyage. He embarks on four different voyages, and a storm precedes every voyage. All the various voyages create a new perspective on the life of Gulliver and new ways of satirizing England’s conventions. On the first voyage to Lilliput, the Gulliver is huge while the Lilliputian is small. Initially, the lilliputians seem sociable, but later they are portrayed as pattern d ridiculous creatures. They convict Gulliver of treason, claiming he is “making water while putting out a fire and saving lives. On the second voyage, he goes to Brobdingnag, a land full of giants and small, just like how he perceived the Lilliputians. He is scared, but his care keepers are gentle. The king humiliates him when he shows him how England and how should be. The third voyage was to Laputa, which neighbours the two locations of his first two voyages. In this land, he can call upon the dead and hence discover history’s deceptions. In Laputa, the people there are overthinkers and ridiculous in a different way. He encounters Stulburds, a race known for its immorality, and he labels them as miserable. In the fourth and last voyage, he goes to the land of Houyhnhnms, with horses endowed with reason; they are clean, rational and simple but are brutal and filth and beasts in human shape. He stays here for several years, and he loves the place and never wants to leave. When he is informed to go, he faints because of sadness. After returning to England, he is disgusted by his own family and other humans. The author intends the reader to be a learner and not just be immersed in their own culture or way of life and think other humans live life like them. Gullivers travels illustrate how individuals can easily perceive their perspectives as absurd and other persons similarly consider their perspectives just as absurd. Thus few persons seek the truth while the majority are only seeking fr validation for what they believe. Therefore this particular literature encourages the reader to learn to seek the truth by whatever means and be open to learning about new cultures.A Modest Proposal To prevent the children of poor people in Ireland from being a burden on their parents or country and to make them beneficial to the public presents an economic article; the author Swift proposes that the country deal with poverty I Ireland by butchering their children and later selling them as food to the rich English landlords. Swift’s proposal is more of a savage comment directed toward Ireland’s legal and economic mistreatment. The piece is ironical conceived to figure out a cheap, easy and fair method for transforming the starving children into useful and sound members of th Commonwealth. Across Ireland, the poor children, mostly the Catholics, were residing in shabbiness since their families were too poor to clothe them or even feed them.
Swift makes his argument from a hard-edged economic point of view and a self-righteous moral stance so he would turn this issue into a solution. In his proposal, he claims that the malnourished children should be fattened up and later fed to the rich landowners of Ireland. The children from low-income families can be sold in the meat market as early as the age of one to help in combating the issue of overpopulation and lack of jobs, and this will help spare families the expenses of nurturing children and providing with extra income and also offer a culinary experience for the wealthy landlords and contribute to the overall economy of the country.British literature is interesting and can be satirical and make the reader think critically. For someone who does not understand satire and irony, British literature is all about irony and satire, reading and learning more interesting. The irony begins in the title, where the reader initially thinks that Swift offers valid solutions to protect the malnourished kids. He makes a contradictory solution to cook the children’s meat.
